Afyonkarahisar's digital trade potential
Afyonkarahisar is Türkiye's natural stone and marble capital. Led by İscehisar, the city is known worldwide for its 'sugar marble', a white stone carrying golden veins; that stone is in demand across a wide market, from the United States to China and France. Marble is by far the largest single item in the city's exports.
Natural stone is gathered into organised industrial zones (OSB) and specialist zones: the İscehisar Marble Specialised OSB and the Afyon OSB hold an integrated production chain running from block extraction to slab and tile processing. The city's total exports have recently reached record levels, in the band of around 700 million dollars.
Food is Afyon's second identity: Afyon sucuk (a spiced sausage), buffalo kaymak (clotted cream), Turkish delight and confectionery all carry geographical indications and are known across the country. Agricultural products such as poppy, cherries and potatoes are strong too; these specialities suit branding, packaging and direct-to-consumer e-commerce very well.
Afyon is at the same time Türkiye's thermal capital: thermal hotels and health tourism facilities built on rich geothermal resources draw guests from within the country and from abroad. That is a large potential which a multilingual, direct-booking digital presence can grow.
The city's weak point is added value: marble is often exported as raw block, and the earnings from processing and branding stay abroad. In the same way most food producers sell unbranded or locally, while thermal hotels leave much of their occupancy to agencies and platforms.
The right digital set-up can change that picture: a multilingual B2B showcase built around processed products keeps marble's added value at the quarry; a geographical-indication brand and e-commerce take food nationwide; and a booking-led site frees the thermal hotel from agency commission. All three of Afyon's strong arms are ready to grow online.
