Mardin's digital commerce potential
Mardin has a strong economic face that is not widely known: its flour, bulgur and pasta industry. The organised industrial zone (OSB) is a food production base with dozens of flour, bulgur and pasta factories; the province is among Türkiye's leading flour exporters, selling into markets such as Syria, Iraq, Nigeria, Ghana and Iran.
Geography drives that export: Mardin can reach Middle Eastern and African markets directly through its border gates. Provincial exports approached half a billion dollars in the first half of 2025, and newly opened border gates are widening the potential further.
Mardin is also a piece of world heritage: with its honey-coloured stone architecture, its Syriac monasteries and its interfaith culture, the city is a living open-air museum. Its historic fabric, together with Midyat and sites on the UNESCO tentative list, makes it a powerful draw for cultural tourism.
Telkari is Mardin's signature craft: silver filigree worked by hand in Midyat, a registered geographical asset and a product with few equivalents anywhere in the world. With the right brand and visual e-commerce, telkari can be sold to collectors and visitors at high added value.
Gastronomy is another strength: içli köfte (ırok), stuffed ribs and the rich Mardin kitchen give firm ground for gastronomy tourism and regional food brands. Textiles and other manufacturing branches are further production areas feeding cross-border trade.
Mardin's opportunity is to bring these three strengths together online: growing flour and bulgur exports with a multilingual B2B setup, taking the heritage of the stone city to guests through multilingual tourism digital, and turning telkari and gastronomy into brands. Production and heritage are strong; what is missing is digital visibility and branding.
