Elazığ's digital trade potential
Elazığ is the city where chrome mining in Türkiye began; nearby Guleman is one of the basins producing the country's highest-grade chrome ore. Mining is the foundation of the city's industrial identity and a significant item in its exports; chrome and its derivatives are among the drivers of the regional economy.
Marble and natural stone are the second strong line: the distinctive coloured marble known as 'Elazığ Vişne' is sought after both in domestic projects and in export markets. Marble processing and the casting and metal industry are concentrated in the Elazığ organised industrial zone (OSB).
Elazığ is also a major energy base: the Keban and Karakaya dams are here, and Keban is one of Türkiye's largest hydroelectric power plants. The reservoirs create capacity not only for energy but also for aquaculture, trout in particular.
Viticulture and winemaking are a long-established identity: the Öküzgözü grape and its wine are identified with Elazığ and lend themselves to origin and terroir storytelling. Registered regional products such as orcik are equally suited to branding and to e-commerce built on geographical indications.
Export volumes are volatile in some periods and relatively modest; although production capacity is high, most companies sell their output in bulk, unbranded or through intermediaries. Ore and marble largely leave the city raw or semi-processed, and the value added and the brand usually end up in other hands.
The right digital positioning can change that picture: with a multilingual technical site, project references and 'supplier'-focused SEO, marble and ore can go straight to the buyer abroad, while branding and e-commerce can connect wine, trout and regional products directly to the consumer. Keeping the value added in Elazığ runs through digital.
