Van's digital trade potential
Van is one of the largest cities in Eastern Anatolia and a key trading gateway on the Iranian border. Sheep and goat farming, border trade, tourism, gastronomy and food stand out in its economy; the city is also an important commercial and services centre for the region.
Van's strongest brand is its breakfast: the 'Van Breakfast' has been the subject of a Guinness record and of 'World Breakfast Day', and it introduces the city on a national and international scale. With the right digital promotion, breakfast houses and restaurants can generate substantial gastronomic tourism revenue.
Tourism potential is high: Lake Van, the world's largest soda lake, together with Akdamar Island and its church, are unique assets for nature and cultural tourism. The Van cat also adds to the city's recognition. Hotels, however, depend heavily on booking platforms, and their direct, multilingual digital presence is weak.
Regional food is rich and registered: herby cheese (otlu peynir) is Van's signature product, and the pearl mullet is a registered species unique to the lake. These products are very well suited to being carried into the national market through branding, cold-chain shipping and e-commerce, yet most producers still sell locally and unbranded.
Border trade is another arm of the city's economy: the Kapıköy border gate and the border trade centre open onto the Iranian market, and hundreds of foreign trade companies operate in the city. Even so, export volumes remain low despite the border gate; that is a large growth gap the right digital and B2B set-up could close.
Van is among Türkiye's leading provinces for sheep and goat farming, and that production strength lays the ground for branding meat, milk and cheese. Overall, Van's real opportunity is to turn its strong tourism and gastronomy brand and its proximity to the Iranian market into genuine revenue online.
