Karabük's digital trade potential
Iron and steel form the backbone of Karabük's economy: the city is where KARDEMİR, Türkiye's first integrated iron and steel plant, was founded, and it is known as 'the factory that builds factories'. A broad rolling mill and metal supply ecosystem has grown up around that plant.
Karabük's steel differs from the country's other steel centres: what stands out here is long steel, meaning reinforcing bar, profile and above all railway rail. Distinct from the flat steel of Zonguldak and Ereğli, that output makes Karabük the leader in rail production in Türkiye, and rail exports to Europe have risen markedly in recent years.
The city's steel and metal exports have reached the one billion dollar level, with sales to more than a hundred countries. For the supply companies around KARDEMİR, that is strong potential which a multilingual B2B shop window can grow further.
Karabük's second identity belongs to a completely different world: Safranbolu. With its historic mansions, bazaar and urban fabric on the UNESCO World Heritage list, Safranbolu is a powerful draw for domestic and international visitors; mansion hotels and boutique tourism are the city's soft power.
Safranbolu saffron and saffron Turkish delight carry geographical indications; forest products and furniture are production lines resting on the region's woodland. The city therefore holds heavy industry, cultural tourism and regional produce side by side.
Karabük's opportunity is to turn these two contrasting strengths into value online: taking the steel supply chain to buyers abroad through a multilingual B2B set-up and 'supplier' SEO, the Safranbolu mansions into booking-led tourism marketing, and saffron and Turkish delight into brands. Production and heritage are strong; what is missing is digital visibility.
