Çankırı's digital trade potential
Çankırı's greatest underground asset is rock salt: the city holds Türkiye's largest rock salt reserve and is home to a five-thousand-year-old salt cave that has been worked since the Hittites. This gives Çankırı a distinctive identity with both an industrial and a tourism dimension.
Salt is far more than a simple mineral; it is a value-added export opportunity. GMP-certified medical salt, halite salt and packaged products make certified sales to the European market possible. Moving from raw salt to medical and branded products is how the revenue stays in Çankırı.
The salt cave is also a health tourism asset: at a depth of 150 metres, it attracts visitors with salt therapy (speleotherapy), which benefits respiratory conditions such as COPD and asthma. This is wellness potential that the right multilingual digital presence can grow.
Industry is developing: the Yakınkent organised industrial zone (OSB) is one of Türkiye's largest and a centre for automotive supply, machinery and food production. Proximity to Ankara and Kırıkkale is a strong advantage in terms of labour and logistics.
Agriculture and forestry complete the economy: pulses, rice from the neighbouring basin and forest and timber products are the region's other lines of production. That diversity opens further opportunities for branding and e-commerce.
Çankırı's opportunity is to turn its distinctive salt ecosystem and its industry into digital value: medical salt into certified B2B exports, the salt cave into multilingual health tourism marketing, and the automotive supply industry into B2B visibility. The resources and the location are strong; what is missing is digital visibility and brand.
