Siirt's digital trade potential
Siirt's signature product is its pistachio: known as 'green gold', the Siirt pistachio is a high-value product with large kernels and a variety of its own that sets it apart from the Antep pistachio. Protected by geographical indication (GI) registration, it sits at the centre of the city's agriculture and its export potential.
Told properly, the Siirt pistachio is a separate and premium category: with a different variety and larger kernels than the Antep pistachio, it can make room for itself in the gourmet market. That is an advantage branding and multilingual e-export can turn into high added value.
The city's long-established craft is mohair weaving: the GI-registered Siirt blanket (herêsî) is woven from mohair and is as soft as velvet. Now going through a state-supported revival, this weaving can be sold at high added value through visual e-commerce and the gift market.
Gastronomy is a strong identity: GI-registered Siirt büryan, cooked in a tandoor around three metres deep, is the city's flavour known beyond its borders. Büryan and Siirt cuisine are firm ground for gastronomy tourism and regional product branding.
Another of Siirt's resources is oil: the crude produced in the region, particularly the high-API crude extracted at Eruh, is regarded as Türkiye's highest-quality crude oil. Honey and sheep farming also round out the provincial economy.
Siirt's opportunity is to turn its pistachios, its weaving and its gastronomy into digital value: the Siirt pistachio into a premium brand and e-export, the mohair blanket into visual e-commerce, büryan into a gastronomy brand. Those three make an identity that cannot be confused with any neighbour's; what is missing is digital visibility and branding.
