Ağrı's digital trade potential
Ağrı's emblem is Mount Ararat (Ağrı Dağı), Türkiye's highest summit: at 5,137 metres it is the roof of the country and the centre of the Noah's Ark legend. Hosting foreign climbing teams every year, it is the country's leading route for high-altitude and mountain tourism; yet it is not promoted anywhere near its worth, and that in itself is a major digital opportunity.
Doğubayazıt is the heart of cultural tourism: the eighteenth-century İshak Paşa Palace, with more than a hundred rooms and its own water-heating system, was a building ahead of its time. With the nearby Meteor Crater and Balık Lake at 2,250 metres, the district offers nature and heritage tourism together in one rich destination.
The Diyadin hot springs are a rising asset in thermal and health tourism: with highly mineralised hot water and a story of healing, they are the region's most visited thermal site. With the right positioning and multilingual promotion they are well placed to draw health tourists from within Türkiye and from neighbouring countries.
The Gürbulak border gate is one of the backbones of the economy: the largest trade gate between Türkiye and Iran, with hundreds of thousands of travellers a year and a high export and transit volume. As a key point on the trade corridor reaching into Central Asia and China, it holds serious B2B potential for the province's logistics and export companies.
Livestock farming is the province's strongest livelihood: with around 1.4 million sheep and goats it is one of Türkiye's leading provinces, and its wide meadows and pastures make it a centre of meat production. Raw milk, however, is not converted into added value as it should be; processing plants run below capacity, and industry is weak.
Among regional products, white honey stands out: the flavour that comes to mind first when Ağrı is mentioned, alongside astragalus honey now going through geographical indication (GI) registration, herbed cheese, butter and selekeli sac kavurma. Ağrı's opportunity is to turn this exceptional landscape and these products into digital value: mountain and thermal tourism into multilingual bookings, honey and cheese into branded e-commerce, and cross-border trade into a B2B channel.
