Şırnak's digital trade potential
The economic heart of Şırnak is the Habur border gate: located in Silopi, it is Türkiye's most important land crossing into Iraq and is often said to be worth dozens of border gates on its own. Millions of vehicles and passengers, and billions of dollars of exports, pass through it every year. Being a critical transit point for trade between the Middle East, Türkiye and Europe creates a large B2B ecosystem of haulage, customs brokerage and export firms around it.
Mining is one of the province's backbones: Şırnak asphaltite has become an established name for a petroleum-derived solid fuel, and with reserves of around 150 million tonnes it accounts for a significant share of Türkiye's coal output. Fields such as Cudi and Gabar, the thermal power plant in Silopi and the oil production that has come to the fore at Gabar in recent years make mining and energy the heavyweight of the economy.
Cizre is a centre of faith and heritage tourism: in local accounts it is one of the first cities founded after the Flood, and the home of the story of Noah's Ark and Mount Cudi. With the Prophet Noah Mosque, the recently restored Red Madrasa (Kırmızı Medrese) known for its red brick, and the tomb of Mem û Zîn, it holds deep cultural tourism potential.
Cizre's global name is Al-Jazari (El-Cezeri): the twelfth-century scholar who lived here and is regarded as a pioneer of cybernetics and robotics, and who designed dozens of machines including water clocks, automata and combination locks. That legacy is a powerful identity and narrative asset, capable of drawing worldwide interest to the city.
Livestock and regional produce provide the supporting base: highland small ruminant farming, butter, cheese, wool, goat hair and mohair are the main assets. Beytüşşebap honey, produced on highlands between 1,700 and 3,000 metres and granted geographical indication registration in 2025, is the province's rising new asset.
There is almost no manufacturing industry and the province sits among the lowest in development rankings; that also means digital competition is low and the opportunity is large. Şırnak's opportunity is clear: turning its trade and logistics strength into multilingual B2B digital, its mining and energy experience into corporate reputation, the Cizre heritage into cultural tourism and geographical-indication honey into a brand.
