Balıkesir's digital trade potential
Balıkesir is one of Türkiye's agricultural and livestock powers; it is among the provinces with the highest milk production in the country and ranks near the top in white meat (poultry) production. Milk, cheese, butter and eggs are the city's flagship products — with very high brand and direct-sales potential.
Olives and olive oil are another of Balıkesir's world-class assets: Edremit, Ayvalık, Havran and Burhaniye are the centre of quality olive oil. These products carry high value in the domestic market and in exports, and lend themselves well to story- and origin-led marketing.
Industry has grown on the back of natural resources; Bandırma is the centre of the fertiliser and chemicals industry, while Gönen and Manyas are the centre of dairy processing. Mineral resources, boron above all, are processed for export.
Despite this strong agri-food and industrial base, many producers depend on middlemen; a brand, a multilingual site and a direct sales channel are usually missing. Even valuable products such as milk and olive oil are sold unbranded and in bulk. A well-built digital presence connects that value straight to the consumer and the importer.
Being close to Marmara and the Aegean gives Balıkesir strong logistics and market access; proximity to large consumer markets such as İstanbul and İzmir is a major opportunity for branded food to capture through direct e-commerce.
The city also has strong nature and coastal tourism through the Kaz Mountains, the Gulf of Edremit and Ayvalık, which creates a separate digital opportunity for hotels, boutique accommodation and regional product brands. This combination of agriculture, industry and tourism turns Balıkesir into a many-sided, balanced digital market.
