Kars's digital trade potential
Milk and cheese sit at the centre of Kars's economic identity: the city is strong in cattle farming and milk production and turns that milk into cheeses known far beyond the region. Geographical-indication Kars kaşar and gruyère are among the most prestigious cheeses in Türkiye; gruyère in particular is a high-value product made in only a few areas.
This cheese culture sets Kars apart from neighbouring Erzurum: while Erzurum is known for civil and göğermiş cheese, Kars's signature is kaşar, gruyère and the long-established cheese-making cluster around villages such as Boğatepe. That is a distinctive story, very well suited to being told and branded.
Beekeeping and regional produce are strong: geographical-indication Kars honey, produced with the Caucasian bee, and the equally registered Kars goose are the city's high-value gastronomic assets. These products are very well suited to reaching the consumer directly through branded e-commerce.
Tourism is Kars's rising star: the Sarıkamış ski resort feeds winter tourism and the thousand-year-old ruins of Ani feed cultural tourism, while the Eastern Express has made Kars the final stop of a romantic rail route and created nationwide attention. That flow is a major opportunity for hotels and gastronomy businesses.
Industry is limited, but agriculture-based specialised (cattle fattening) investments are planned; the backbone of the economy is the producer, the dairy and the family farm. This structure creates a producer-based trading culture in which cooperatives and geographical indication associations are influential.
Kars's opportunity is to bring its distinctive cheese and gastronomy assets and its strengthening tourism together online: taking kaşar and gruyère into a brand and cold-chain e-commerce with the geographical indication story, and the Sarıkamış-Ani-Eastern Express flow into multilingual tourism content. The value and the story are strong; what is missing is brand and digital visibility.
