Detailed definition
Unlike off-page SEO, on-page work is entirely under your control: the title tag, meta description, a single h1 per page, the h2-h6 hierarchy, image alt text, internal linking, how well the content matches search intent, the canonical URL, hreflang on multilingual sites and structured data. There is no fixed character limit for titles or descriptions; truncation in the results depends on pixel width. A practical guide: titles of roughly 50-60 characters and descriptions of roughly 120-160. If the on-page foundations are weak, off-page work has limited effect.
Examples
- Trying two different titles for the same page in turn and comparing the click-through rate in Search Console.
