A barcode and labelling system that prints the weight from the scale straight onto the label — no retyping

A lot of what leaves Gaziantep is sold by weight, shipped in cartons and loaded on pallets. The label on those goods is the cheapest record a business keeps — and the most useful. We bring the scale, the label printer and the stock record together on one screen: the operator selects the product and puts the goods on the scale, the weight comes across by itself, the label prints with the batch number, and the same information lands in the system. The source code and label templates stay with you; we do the installation at your site in Başpınar or Şehitkamil.

  • In our own field research on the 1,108 companies in the Gaziantep organised industrial zone (OSB), the sector breakdown showed 257 textile, 145 food, 116 plastics and packaging, and 107 carpet companies. In the sub-breakdown — figures we flag as estimates — flour and milling shows 45 companies, packaging 41, yarn 33, bulgur and pulses 6, chocolate and confectionery 5. In other words, the volume of goods produced by weight and sold by the kilo in this city is substantial; a scale that doesn't talk to the label is not a small gap but a source of errors that repeats every shift.
  • The same research confirmed 294 companies as exporters. Export customers usually impose their own label format: a specific barcode standard, English product names, country of origin, batch number and a QR code. Trying to meet that demand by hand means starting from scratch with every new customer.
  • Carpet and textiles talk about roll and metre labels, food about batch and expiry dates, plastics and packaging about reels and kilos, machinery and metals about serial numbers. With the city's sector mix this varied, the same label engine has to cover these different needs through templates — so you don't end up buying a separate program for every sector.
  • The scale breakdown showed 236 micro and 413 small companies. At that size, labelling usually runs at a single station in the hands of one operator. The success of the system is measured by how fast that one person can drive the screen — not by how many features it packs in.
  • We come to your site in Başpınar OSB or Şehitkamil and connect the scale and the printer in place. Cables, drivers and label rolls drag on when discussed remotely; because we are in the same city, taking a look on site is not a travel question for us.

Where labelling gets stuck

  • The scale and the computer work separately. The operator reads the weight off the display and types it in; a slipped decimal or a wrong digit flows straight through to the invoice and the customer.
  • Labels are printed from a Word or Excel template. When the computer changes or the printer driver updates, the layout shifts, text overflows and the barcode becomes unreadable.
  • There are barcodes in the warehouse but nobody scans them; staff type the codes in on the keyboard. The barcode's real benefit — error prevention — never kicks in.
  • The same product has a different label for each customer, and which one to print lives in the operator's memory. A load that goes out with the wrong label comes back as a return.
  • There is no link between the carton label and the pallet label. Which cartons are on which pallet, and which batch is in which carton, cannot be read from the records; when a count is needed, the pallet gets opened.
  • Batch and lot numbers are not printed on the label. When a complaint arrives, nobody can find out which shift produced the goods or from which raw material; if a recall is needed, the scope cannot be narrowed.
  • The label format an export customer wants is prepared by hand every time. A new customer means a new format and another night shift.
  • A QR code is requested, but what goes inside it isn't standardised; different content goes in each time, and the reading side gets different results.
  • When the label printer fails or the roll runs out, the line stops; nothing is in writing about who does what to switch to the backup printer.
  • No record is kept of printed labels. How many were printed, which were cancelled, how many times a product was re-printed — there is no answer.

Scale, printer and records on one screen

We have done this end to end before. For one business we built a weighing and labelling station that joins the scale to the label printer and runs on a product list of more than two hundred items — a setup where the operator picks the product and prints the label from a single screen. The headings below come out of that project and what we have seen on factory floors; they are not a fixed package, and we determine which ones you need at discovery.

Scale and balance integration

The weight from the electronic scale is read directly over the serial port or the network; the operator never types the kilos. No label prints until the scale settles on a stable reading, and tare and net weight are kept separately. That removes both the chance of a mistyped weight and of printing before the measurement settles.

Label template engine

Labels are generated directly in the printer's own language (on common industrial printers, the label command language known as ZPL). The template belongs to the system, not to a computer; change the computer and the label still prints the same. Different templates are defined by product, customer and shipment type, and the system picks which one to print in which case.

Batch, lot and the traceability chain

Every production run opens a batch or lot number and prints it on the label. Links run from the unit label to the carton label and from the carton label to the pallet label; scan the pallet's barcode and the list of cartons and batches inside comes up on screen. In a complaint or a recall, the scope is set by records, not by guesswork.

Carton, pallet and shipment labels

Carton counts, pallet layout and customer details are managed from one place; because the shipment label and the packing list are produced from the same source, the two always match. A special format requested by a customer or an export buyer is set up once as a template and used automatically on every following shipment.

QR codes and verification

What goes into the QR code is standardised once: product code, batch, production date and, where needed, a verification address. A printed label can be read back and verified instantly with the scanner at the same station; a label that won't scan doesn't leave the line. Errors are caught at the station, before they reach the customer.

Station hardware and on-site installation

We take on the hardware as much as the software: the scale connection, the label printer, the scanner and, where needed, a touch screen. We leave a one-page field note covering the switch to the backup printer, roll changes and the most common faults. The aim is for the line to keep moving without waiting for technical support.

How we approach a barcode and labelling project

    Seeing where the label is printed

    We come to your factory and stand where the label is actually printed: at the scale, next to the carton line, at the dispatch door. How many variants of each label exist, who prints them, where errors occur most — we establish this on site. We also inventory your existing printer and scale makes at this step.

  2. 02

    Agreeing the label and numbering scheme

    What goes into the barcode and the QR code, how batch numbers are generated, and which template goes to which customer are put in writing. Get this scheme wrong and tens of thousands of already-printed labels become invalid later; so these decisions are taken and approved before any code is written.

  3. 03

    A pilot at a single station

    One station is chosen; the scale is connected, the templates are defined, and it is tried in real production together with the operator. The old method runs alongside for a while. Printed labels are scanned back for verification; readability, durability and print speed are seen in real conditions.

  4. 04

    Roll-out and the stock connection

    Once the pilot holds, it spreads to the other stations and the dispatch point; the label record is connected to stock and dispatch, so every printed label lands in the system as a movement. How it will talk to your existing ERP is finalised at this stage.

  5. 05

    Handover and field notes

    Source code, label templates, setup steps and hardware settings are handed over in writing. A one-page usage note is left for the operator and a troubleshooting note for the technical team. When a small template change is needed tomorrow, the aim is for your own team to be able to make it.

Frequently asked questions

Can our existing scale and printer be used, or do we have to buy new ones?

In most cases the existing hardware can be used. The deciding factor is whether the device exposes data: a scale that can send its weight over a serial port or the network, and a label printer that accepts its own command language, are enough. If an older device cannot do that, we say so at discovery and put the replacement cost and the alternatives in front of you. Selling new hardware up front is not something we run as a business model.

Is it just a label-printing program, or does it connect to stock as well?

Both are possible, and the choice is yours. It can be set up as a standalone station that only prints labels, or so that every printed label is written into the system as a stock movement. The second is more valuable, because the label is already the most natural recording point in production and dispatch — but installing simply first and connecting later is also a sound sequence.

Have you actually done this before?

Yes. Can you produce the label format our export customer requires?

Usually yes. Give us the buyer's label instruction (dimensions, field layout, barcode type, mandatory fields) and we define it as a template; on later shipments, selecting that customer brings up the correct template automatically. If the instruction is unclear, or the standard requires pre-registration in the buyer's own system, we say so up front and list the necessary steps.

If the label printer breaks down, does production stop?

We address that risk during installation. A backup printer is defined and can be brought online in a single step; a field note is left covering roll changes, head cleaning and the most common faults. Labels that could not be printed are also queued and printed in order once the printer is back; a skipped label never disappears silently.

What should we put inside the QR code?

There is no standard answer — it depends on the sector and the purpose. In food it is typically the product code, batch and production or expiry date; in dispatch, the pallet and carton identity; in consumer-facing use, a verification address. What matters is deciding the content once and printing it in the same structure on every label. We take that decision together at discovery and put it in writing.

How long does it take, and what drives the cost?

The number of label variants, the number of scales and printers to integrate, and the depth of the stock connection are what decide it. A single-station setup with a few templates and a multi-point system with a pallet chain writing into the ERP are different jobs. That is why we start with discovery and a single-station pilot, and take the roll-out decision with you once the results are in.

Can we change the label templates ourselves later on?

That is the goal. Templates are defined inside the system, and the field layout and texts can be edited from the admin screen; renaming a product or adding a new field doesn't require us. When a new barcode standard or a substantial redesign is needed, we provide support. The source code and templates are handed over to you in any case.
