What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)? Brand Visibility in ChatGPT and Perplexity

GEO is the discipline that makes brands visible in AI engines such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. How it differs from SEO, plus a guide.

Beyond classic SEO: AI is no longer the one doing the search, it is the one giving the answer

Imagine searching Google for "the best dental clinic in Istanbul". Ten years ago you saw 10 blue links. Today, when you ask ChatGPT or Perplexity the same question, you get 3 direct brand recommendations, a price range and even a booking link.

This is exactly where GEO — Generative Engine Optimization comes in. Classic SEO is optimisation to appear on Google's results page; GEO is optimisation to make your brand appear in the answers of AI engines such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity.

In this article we will explain what GEO is, why it is the most important digital marketing discipline of late 2026, and the concrete steps to make your brand visible in AI engines today.

Four fundamental differences between GEO and SEO

Dimension Classic SEO GEO
Goal Page 1 of Google results Being cited as a reference in the AI answer box
Click behaviour The user clicks a link The user gets the answer directly from the AI
Content format Long articles, keyword optimisation Structured answers, FAQs, source references
Authority signal Backlinks + Domain Authority Source citations + Schema markup + E-E-A-T

When ChatGPT or Perplexity generates an answer to a question, it does not "look for proof"; it asks "which sites have I read" and produces a summary. If your site content cannot be easily parsed within the LLM's training set or in a real-time crawl, your brand is never mentioned.

7 concrete steps for GEO

1. Have an llms.txt file

llms.txt is a Markdown file that gives AI engines a structured brief of your brand. It is the AI-engine counterpart of robots.txt. It should contain:

  • A one-paragraph summary of the brand
  • Founding year, location, founder
  • Service areas
  • Key page URLs (a canonical list)
  • FAQs

AI engines make /llms.txt one of the first files they read when crawling a site. Very few brands in Türkiye use this file yet — early movers win.

2. Invest in Schema.org structured data

Use JSON-LD to state each page's type, relationships and metadata clearly:

  • Organization schema → your brand's core identity
  • WebPage + breadcrumbs → page hierarchy
  • FAQPage → serves questions to the AI ready-made
  • HowTo → presents processes step by step
  • Article + author → clarifies the content source
  • Service → defines your services

AI engines love schema because it is far more accurate than parsing raw text. Rank Math (WordPress) or Astro Schema components (modern sites) automate this work.

3. Allow AI crawlers

Make sure your robots.txt contains these lines:

User-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /

User-agent: ClaudeBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

User-agent: Google-Extended
Allow: /

Google-Extended is the permission for Google AI Overviews and Gemini to index your site. If you block it, you will never appear in Google's AI answers. Many brands reject these bots without realising it.

4. Produce content in FAQ format

AI engines love the question-and-answer structure, because users already ask questions in natural language. Add a block of 6-10 FAQs beneath your service pages, structured with <details>/<summary> HTML tags or FAQPage schema.

A practical tip: do not lift your FAQs from competitors and copy them as they are. Collect the questions your customers actually ask — go through your sales and support records and extract "what gets asked most in the first meeting?".

5. Strengthen your E-E-A-T signals

The E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) signals valued by Google and OpenAI are even more critical in AI. When AI engines decide "which site shall I cite?", they choose based on author identity, proof of experience and references.

In every article:

  • An author bio + LinkedIn link
  • A "last updated" date for the article
  • Relevant real case studies
  • Certification badges (such as Google Partner, Meta Business Partner)

6. Build a canonical link structure

While learning a topic, AI engines ask "which page is the main reference for this topic?". Create a single "pillar page" for the flagship topics in your industry and link the sub-topics to it. This canonical structure is good for SEO too.

Example: make "What is digital marketing?" your pillar page and link from it to the SEO, GEO, Meta Ads and Google Ads sub-pages. When the AI is asked, it will mostly cite this pillar page.

7. Measure inside the AI engines

The hardest part of GEO: there is no official measurement tool like Google Search Console. Pragmatic methods:

  • Monthly manual testing: ask ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity "the best brand in [your industry]". Does your brand come up?
  • Brand mention monitoring: use tools such as Mention.com or Brand24 to track where your brand appears in AI engine answers.
  • Traffic source analysis: watch "Referral / chatgpt.com" or "Referral / perplexity.ai" traffic in GA4. Users arriving from these sources are coming from an AI answer.

Why is GEO critical for Türkiye in 2026?

ChatGPT's global reach has hit 200 million weekly users. In Türkiye, monthly ChatGPT users have passed 7 million. Perplexity, meanwhile, has become a favourite of B2B decision-makers in particular.

85% of Turkish brands have not yet taken a single step towards GEO. This is the same position brands that had not yet started SEO were in back in 2010. Early movers will hold the advantage for 5-10 years.

Conclusion: start today, see the difference in 6 months

The biggest misconception about GEO is saying "this is futuristic, better to wait". Brands that wait are losing market share to competitors in AI engines every month. Brands that start today gain measurable visibility within 6 months.
